Dangerous Women presents works from the holdings of the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art. The title explores different artists’ responses to women of the Bible, celebrating their strength and their ability to take back power in adverse circumstances. Featured paintings include works by Pietro da Cortona, Francesco Cairo, and Fede Calizia, which stand as a reminder of how biblical women influence modern imagination to this day. All of these dangerous women – from Mary Magdalene to Judith and Esther, to Salome and Potiphar’s Wife – shaped biblical history.
This title accompanies an exhibition, running at the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum and the Cornell Fine Arts Museum from September 8 - December 30, 2018.
